How to Prepare for your Newborn Lifestyle Photography Session

How to Prepare for your Newborn Lifestyle Photography Session

Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

You’ve booked your newborn pictures in Chicago, browsed through images, and are now left wondering how the heck you are going to prepare for this. After all, you’re bringing home a newborn and left to survive on minimal sleep. Maybe you’re aware at just how crazy life is about to get, and you’re trying to read up in advance. Or, maybe it’s 3 a.m. and you’re up rocking your new baby, reading up a few hours before the photography session. Either way, relax. We’ve got this.

Preparing for your lifestyle newborn photo session

1. Declutter

Let me clarify one very important thing – you do not need to worry about having the place spotless for a newborn lifestyle session. But there are some small things you can do, that will make the background less distracting so we can focus on the baby in the images.

Clean off dressers and end tables in the master bedroom, nursery, and living room. These are the three main rooms we are going to photograph in. There’s nothing worse than seeing a beautiful image ruined by a bright orange Fanta can in the background! Have beds made, blinds drawn, and if you have an extra minute, do a quick windex of the windows in each of the rooms.

2. Plan your outfits

As in, plan to wear something comfortable. Solid. light, neutral colors usually work best. Avoid neon colors, and stay away from garments with words or giant labels. Most parents dress comfortably, and most moms opt for minimal, natural looking makeup. As for baby, I bring some wraps with me (always washed since my last session), in case you want to use them. Or, we will use what you have at home.

3. Organize & communicate any special requests

If you have a specific image that you love and want to have taken, let me know! Any special blankets or wraps that you want incorporated, communicate with me at the beginning of your session, so we include them. My grandma hand-sewed all of our baby blankets – I totally get that you may have a sentimental request.

4. Plan for breaks

If baby is very calm and stays sleeping during the whole session, we could very well be finished rather quickly. However, that is usually not the case. Your session has more than enough time built in for breaks to change, nurse, and take any needed cuddle breaks. Expect to take a few breaks, and don’t be nervous about it.

5. Relax and enjoy the session

The benefit of doing an in-home lifestyle session, is you get natural and organic pictures of your new family in the comfort of your own home. It’s a relaxing and stress free way to capture newborn pictures in Chicago. These first moments go by so fast, and I’m so glad you’re getting them documented.
